The face of the HVAC technician is changing. While women still make up less than 5% of the workforce, that number is climbing, driven by targeted mentorship programs and a shift in industry culture.
We visited the "Women in Mechanical" conference in Atlanta, where over 500 tradeswomen gathered to network and learn. The energy was electric.
"The tools don't know your gender," says keynote speaker and master plumber Jessica Lewis. "This trade is about problem-solving. Women are natural problem solvers. We just need to be given the chance to hold the wrench."
Companies are finding that diverse teams perform better. "Our female techs have some of the highest customer satisfaction scores," notes a regional service manager. "They tend to be excellent communicators and very detail-oriented."
